Caring for an aging dog

Part 2

Caring for an aging dog brings up a whole new set of health conditions. In Part 1 of Caring for an aging dog, we covered arthritis, one of the ailments that your aging dog might face as they enter their senior years. In this post we provide more information about how to identify the symptoms of cancer so that you can seek treatment immediately.

Cancer

  • We all know that cancer steals away lives too soon and this is as true in dogs as it is humans. Watch for signs of cancer including the following:
  • Unusual odors, new lumps or growths under the skin. Always have these checked by your vet.
  • Weight loss. If your previously plump lump of love is now, relatively and suddenly, skinny, have them checked out by your bet.
  • Similarly, if your dog suddenly loses their once healthy appetite, this could signal a medical condition that requires veterinary care.
  • Lethargy in older  dogs is sometimes hard to spot.  The key is to watch for changes in activity level. If activity drops off precipitously, have them seen by a vet.
  • Breathing difficulties in dogs can signal lung cancer and so any sudden respiratory issues should be checked out quickly.
  • Any noticeable behavior changes should be noted and reported to your vet clinic.  If you dog is hiding under the bed suddenly or has lost interest in their favorite game,  they might be in pain.
  • Open sores should, of course, be cared for. If your dog has an unexplained sore, have your vet take a look at it.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea should always be reported to your vet if they last more than two to three days or have blood in them.
  • Pale gums are a sign of shock or blood loss. Cancer can be one of many things that cause this. Have your veterinarian examine your beloved dog.
